What Is Managed WordPress Hosting?
Managed WordPress Hosting takes many forms, but in essence, managed hosting means that the technical aspects of running a website are handled by the web host. So you, the small business owner, can rest easy knowing that your small business website will be fast, secure, backed up and updated.
Before I start my Kinsta review (Kinsta is my managed WordPress hosting provider of choice), I’ll provide a quick overview of the contents of this article. Also, it’s important that you have at least a rudimentary understanding of how managed WordPress hosting works.

Are There Different Types of Managed WordPress Hosting?
The answer is an emphatic yes. Not all managed WordPress hosting is created equal. Managed WordPress hosting has become very popular as small business owners and bloggers realize that creating and maintaining a WordPress website requires consistent technical management. As folks realize this, they look for a more turn-key solution.
Managed WordPress hosting has gained popularity and many low-cost options have emerged as traditional web hosts have jumped on the managed hosting bandwagon. So now you can find managed WordPress hosting from $5 per month to well over $100 per month.
Low-Cost Managed WordPress Hosting
Cheap managed WordPress hosting is (basically) shared hosting optimized for WordPress websites.
Your WordPress website resides on a server with many other websites (often hundreds). However, the server is set up to better handle WordPress installations, rather than other types of websites.
Typically, web hosts offering cheap managed WordPress hosting will update your website, provide regular backups and assist with security.
While it’s slightly more expensive than basic shared hosting (because it’s managed and optimized for WordPress), it’s still relatively inexpensive because it is, after all, shared hosting.
Shared hosting works well for low-traffic websites. Hallmarks of typical shared hosting include: cheap hardware, CPU resource limitations, hundreds of customers packed onto one server, performance issues, downtime and poor customer support.
If you know you’re going to be using WordPress, want to save some money, don’t mind a do-it-yourself approach to WordPress and website-building and aren’t a performance fanatic, shared hosting is perfect for you.
Keep in mind that if your WordPress website ever starts to get busy, you’ll be forced to upgrade to a more robust plan. This often involves upgrading to a VPS which can be technically challenging.
High-End Managed WordPress Hosting
If you’re the type to skimp on quality to save a few dollars, high-end managed WordPress hosting is not for you.
If you have an entry-level blog or website that gets little traffic, high-end managed WordPress hosting may not be for you.
If you have a WooCommerce website or WordPress website that needs 100% uptime, rock-solid security and blazing speed, high-end managed hosting is for you.
Think of it this way — if you edit video for a living, you’ll invest in a high quality computer so you can deliver top-quality results in a timely fashion. If you make your living taking photos, relying on your phone to deliver professional results wouldn’t be an option. So if you rely on your website for your business, you’re going to invest in top-end hosting (at least I would).
Kinsta — My Choice For High-End Managed WordPress Hosting
Kinsta is a high-end managed WordPress hosting provider. They take care of all your website needs. They run their services on cutting edge technology and provide the ultimate in support. Notable Kinsta clients include Ubisoft, Intuit, Ricoh and GE (among others).
Kinsta utilizes the Google Cloud Platform — the world’s fastest infrastructure. Google uses it and so can you. Choose one of 15 data centers located throughout the USA, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and South America. They are placed strategically to offer the lowest latency.
Not only does Kinsta use the Google Cloud Platform, they use Google’s “premium tier” network. Some web hosts might utilize Google’s “standard tier” network service to cut costs, but Kinsta doesn’t believe in second best.
Kinsta is also the first managed WordPress host exclusively powered by the Google Cloud platform and LXD container technology.
LXD is a next-generation container hypervisor which enables Kinsta to completely isolate not just each account, but every website. This improves security and ensures that no resources are shared.
Oh, and Kinsta also uses state-of-the-art technology like Nginx, PHP 7, and MariaDB to make sure your website loads in the blink of an eye.
Some high-profile companies utilizing the Google Cloud Platform (Compute Engine or App Engine) include Spotify, Home Depot, Snapchat, HSBC, HTC, Best Buy, Philips, Domino’s, Feedly, ShareThis, Coca Cola, Sony Music, and Ubisoft.
Not only is Kinsta fast (like, really fast) but it’s always optimized. As a WordPress user, I’ve spent countless hours optimizing my websites for speed. And you probably have as well.
Kinsta utilizes full page caching at the server level to deliver your content almost instantly. Kinsta’s cache plugin (developed in-house) is installed by default on all hosted sites. So there’s no need to install and configure a complicated, technical caching plugin like W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache.
Here’s what happens (with me) when I experience a website slowdown for an unknown reason.
- I check the plugins. I deactivate every plugin, then re-activate one plugin. I test the website for speed at GTMetrix. I continue this process with each plugin looking for a culprit.
- I check the php version. If I find an old version of php, I update it to the latest version offered by the web host (this is almost never the latest, fastest version).
- I check out the technical details. APC? Memcache? Memcached? Xcache? ETC? Zend Opcache? NGINX? Reverse proxy?
- I re-configure the complicated caching plugin to see if I have a setting wrong. Every time I change one of the hundreds of settings, I re-test the website speed over at GTMetrix.
- I optimize the database.
- I delete any suspect plugins.
- I update everything.
- I consider whether the website is just too busy for shared hosting. Maybe it’s time to upgrade to a VPS.
- I swear, beat my head against a wall, swear some more, swear again then call technical support and swear at them.
- And throughout all of this, I’m constantly asking why.
You won’t have to ask why with Kinsta. You won’t have to troubleshoot or become uber-technical. Your site will just be fast. All the time. And that’s really important. According to surveys done by Akamai and Gomez.com, nearly half of website users expect sites to load in two seconds or less. And if not? They leave.
Kinsta’s secure WordPress hosting solution employs active and passive measures to stop attacks. They continuously (minute by minute) monitor your website, have extremely tight software-based restrictions in place, detect DDoS attacks in real time, and block malicious code from entering their network.
Not only that, Kinsta offers a security guarantee with all their accounts. If your WordPress website somehow does manage to get hacked, they’ll fix it — free of charge.
As a WordPress user, I’ve spent countless hours (did I say that before?) securing my websites then fixing them when they get hacked anyway. How important is your time to you?
This Is Not Shared Hosting
Kinsta utilizes LXD managed hosts and orchestrated LXC software containers for each site.
What does this mean?
Every WordPress website lives in its own isolated container. The resources for each website are completely private and are not shared with anyone else, or even with your other websites.
This ensures a significantly higher level of security and performance than any shared hosting could ever provide.
24/7 Technical Support From WordPress Experts
I’ve tried a variety of web hosts since 1998. Many times I’ve called (or chatted online with) technical support only to end the conversation without a solution.
That doesn’t happen with Kinsta. The folks at Kinsta do one thing — WordPress — and they do it well. They don’t guess. They discover the problem(s) and help you find a resolution.
Many times I’ve waited on hold . . . and waited . . . and waited . . . until I finally reached a low-tier technician that was reading out of a manual. Again, that doesn’t happen with Kinsta. All their technicians are top-tier, experienced WordPress experts.
There’s a reason most web hosts don’t want to be featured on performance benchmark websites like this one. The reason is painfully obvious — they won’t measure up to the competition. Check out Kinsta’s scores by scrolling to the conclusion at the bottom of the following pages. They’re in the top-tier WordPress performance winners in every category.
- $25-50/month Tier Results
- $51-100/month Tier Results
- $101-200/month Tier Results
- $201-500/month Tier Results
- $500+/month Enterprise Tier Results
A Simplified Dashboard
If you’ve managed a website before, you probably have experience with cPanel, the most popular website control panel (dashboard) on the market.
Kinsta wanted to re-imagine cPanel and create a dashboard specifically for folks running WordPress websites. They wanted something clean, fast and intuitive. And that’s exactly what they’ve created.
Kinsta’s 24/7, instant support is always a click away on the bottom-right side of the dashboard. Everything you need to manage your website is available on the left.
The dashboard is fully responsive (works well on a mobile device) so you don’t need to download a separate app. You can easily control your WordPress website from anywhere. Take backups, launch migrations, check for plugin updates, chat with our support team, and even clear the cache on your WordPress site, right from your phone.
More all the details on the Kinsta dashboard, check out this page.
A staging environment is a big deal. A really big deal. You’re not going to have the same website forever, right? You’re not going to let your page become stale, right? Eventually you’ll give your WordPress website a complete face-lift.
That when a staging environment is invaluable.
If you’re redesigning a website that doesn’t include a staging environment, you’ll be making changes to the live website, inconveniencing your users with “under construction” messages or an incomplete, partially-functional website. That’s not OK.
With a staging environment, you can completely redesign your website in the background! Your live website remains unaffected. When you want your new creation to go live — click a button and your new website replaces your old website instantly — with no interruption of services for your customers.
With Kinsta, you get a staging environment for your WordPress website. So, tinker away!
Is a free website migration really a big deal? Well, yes. It is. Many web hosts offer free website migrations, but if they don’t, and you already have a WordPress website, avoid them. Moving a WordPress website is a huge pain in the you-know-what.
Kinsta will not only move your WordPress website, they’ll make sure there’s no downtime and they’ll test your website to be sure everything works as it should before making it live.
Daily Backups With One-Click Restore
Kinsta keeps daily backups of your WordPress websites. With just one click, you can fully restore your website to a former state. No complications. No troubles. No effort. No frustration. Click, restore, continue running your business.
Try this: Google “restoring WordPress website” and read a few of the results. Restoring a WordPress website from a backup can be a complex, highly technical nightmare.
If your website is hosted with Kinsta and you want to restore from a backup for any reason, just click the button and be done with it.
KeyCDN — CDN Integration
Kinsta has partnered with KeyCDN (a content delivery network) to make your websites fly anywhere in the world.
KeyCDN, like Kinsta, is always proactive about using cutting-edge technology. KeyCDN has long been providing rock-solid, dependable and affordable content delivery services. They were one of the first CDN providers to launch HTTP/2 support and provide free SSL with Let’s Encrypt.
For more information on how a CDN works and why you should be using one, check out this article.
Have you ever noticed the little padlock by many websites’ urls? It’s important. It means the website uses the SSL protocol or the TLS protocol. The padlock indicates that all information, most importantly banking details, is secured.
Setting up SSL with some web hosts is a technical pain. Not so with Kinsta. It’s as simple as pressing a button.
No Marketing Ploys or Deceptions
Many web hosts advertise “unlimited bandwidth” and “unlimited storage space.” There is no such thing as unlimited. These are marketing buzzwords. These web hosts will limit you if you abuse this. Kinsta doesn’t use tricks like this for clients.
Most web hosts suspend accounts for resource abuse (accidental or not). This takes a business offline which is not acceptable. Kinsta takes a different approach. They constantly monitor sites (24/7) and if for some reason they determine that perhaps you need more PHP workers or disk space, they’ll reach out to you and assist in determining the appropriate plan of action for your website.
Kinsta’s base plan starts at $30 per month. Prices go up from there. Check out the chart to see if there’s a plan that fits your needs. Click the chart for a larger version or head on over to Kinsta’s website for more details.
